I know, I know, it’s almost February but this year, I'm thinking New Year's Day is not going to be just that first day in January but view every day as a new day in the year. Maybe this way, we will strive to do the things we planned to do and not feel disheartened about not accomplishing our goals.

2011 was a busy year, it was a “noisy” year too, and it was also the year where I reflected about many things after celebrating one of my big birthday milestones.

I realized, I didn’t read enough, I didn’t write enough, my mind was constantly racing and I was trying to accomplish way too much in a short period of time while still giving 200% to my clients and my family. I need to slow down, take a deep breath and remember that I am only human. I need to take some time out for myself and do the things I enjoy doing. This is imperative in maintaining a well-balanced business and personal life. Hmmmm… I think I'm sounding like a life coach?

2012 started with a bang! A New Year’s Eve Wedding. We worked very hard, didn’t get home until 4:00 a.m. After all is said and done, when your client is extremely happy and pleased with your work, that’s all that matters despite all the challenges it took to get the job done. When you receive that fabulous testimonial, you feel an adrenaline-charged rush, a feeling that preps you for the next challenge. Isn’t that what we all strive to accomplish?

With that said, thank you to all my followers for your loyalty and staying in touch. 2012 is going to be a greater year! I’m excited about my upcoming projects as well as future collaborations with some fabulous people in the industry. So, stay tuned as we bring you up to speed and post many more fabulous articles and finds.

Communicating with Clarity

The Management Report Center published a document called 50 Most Misused and Abused Words in Business Writing that used to be available online. I discovered the article a few years ago and have since been unable to find it online again*. Luckily, I saved a copy, and am able to share some of these with you!

If you are a business owner/operator, ensure that your published materials (whether print or online) are free from some of these common errors that spell-check might not catch! This list is helpful to all, and I hope many of you catch these mistakes when you come across them!

I chose to share only 21 of the 50 listed, but please feel free to leave a comment if you would like to see more in a follow-up post!

accept, except
accept - (verb) to agree with, take in, receive. Example: We accept your decision.
except - (preposition) apart from. Example: All committee members are present except for Ms. Brown.

acute, chronic
acute - (adjective) sharp, intense, critical. Example: The company has an acute shortage of skilled workers right now.
chronic - (adjective) constant, habitual, long-lasting. Example: She is unable to work because of a chronic illness.

adverse, averse
adverse - (adjective) unfavorable, opposing one's interest. Example: They found themselves in adverse circumstances.
averse - (adjective) - antipathy, repugnance, having the feeling of being opposed. Example: She is not adverse to increasing her workload.

all right, alright
all right - fine, OK. Example: It's all right to leave early.
alright - incorrect spelling.

assure, ensure, insure
assure - (verb) to state with confidence, pledge or promise. Example: I assure you the check is in the mail.
ensure - (verb) to make certain. Example: Following the instructions ensure you won't get hurt.
insure - (verb) to purchase insurance. Example: insure the package before you mail it.

compliment, complement
compliment - (verb) to give praise. Example: I complimented Steve on his speech.
complement - (verb) to complete something or match it well. Example: Her skills complemented the needs of our department.

disburse, disperse
disburse - (verb) to pay, distribute, scatter. Example: They disbursed name tags to everyone attending the meeting.
disperse - (verb) to drive off, spread widely, cause to vanish. Example: The throng of fans dispersed into the stands.

farther, further
farther - (adverb) at or to a greater distance. Example: We are located farther down the highway.
further - (adverb) more or additional -- but not related to distance. Example: We need to have further discussion on that.

fewer, less
fewer - (adjective) of a small number, only used with countable items. Example: He made fewer mistakes than last time.
less - (adjective or adverb) to a smaller extent, amount or degree -- used with quantities that cannot be individually counted. Example: If the made less noise, we could concentrate.

imply, infer
imply - (verb) to suggest. Example: What are you implying by that accusation?
infer - (verb) to deduce from evidence. Example: From the look on your face, I can infer you're not happy with the decision.

E-Reader 101

Amazon Kindle, Apple iPad, Barnes and Noble Nook, or Kobo eReader...

Choices, choices and more choices... we are constantly bombarded by the "newer and better" in electronics. So, how do you decide?

According to an article I read in my National Association of Female Executives (NAFE) Magazine, "carrying the new bestseller in your already-too-heavy workbag is so last century. With all the reading you do to keep your competitive edge, consider investing in an e-reader."

But which one should you purchase?

David Carnoy, executive of CNET had the following suggestion to NAFE, who considers him the smartest techie they know.

E-READER: Amazon Kindle (from $139 amazon.com)
PRO: Long battery life: turn the wireless on and read for up to three weeks, turn wireless off and read for a month. 4 GB of memory means you can store 3,500 books.
CON: No expansion slot for adding more memory. Battery is sealed into the device and isn't removable. Not compatible with loaner e-books from libraries that use the EPUB format.
BEST FOR: Someone who has a long reading list, looking for user-friendly device and doesn't usually buy books on the fly.

E-READER: Apple iPad (from $499 store.apple.com)
PRO: Multiple features including Web, email, photos, video and a large screen make it an all-in-one package.
CON: The price tag.
BEST FOR: Someone who is looking to do more than just reading with the device.

E-READER: Barnes and Noble Nook ($149, new Nook Color listed at $249 barnesandnoble.com)
PRO: Large library with more than a million e-books, newspapers and magazines. Wi-Fi connectivity. 2 GB of internal memory as well as an expansion slot for additional memory.
CON: Lacks a text-to-speech feature. Color LCD appears to have a significant impact on battery life. In-store reading and loaning capabilities come with notable limits and caveats.
BEST FOR: Someone who is looking for more bells and whistles and doesn't mind the shorter battery life.

E-READER: Kobo eReader ($139, recent listed price drop at $99 borders.com)
PRO: Now available on Wi-Fi. Users can select more than 2 million e-books.
CON: Text and images are black-and-white only.
BEST FOR: The occasional reader who isn't looking to make a major investment.

Tweet Your Way to Better Business

Using Facebook as a marketing tool is almost mandatory. But before you ask clients to friend you or follow you on Twitter, consider the most effective uses of social media. Here are some tips from Giovanni Gallucci, an award-winning new media producer, author and digital media strategist.

Research. Learn how to find your existing and potential customers. Search for groups and buckets of people who share a demographic on the social media sites, then join the groups and start interacting.

Expand, don’t replace. Use social media to amp up current strategies, not replace them. “Some small business owners and entrepreneurs think social media is going to come in and replace their other types of advertising and marketing,” says Gallucci. “We find best success when we use sites like Twitter to compliment other advertising and marketing tactics.”

Build slowly. Start with just one, two, maybe three sites that make sense for your industry. Try tactics like building groups for disseminating information, posting giveaways on Facebook and sharing links about new trends on Twitter.

Protect your reputation. Be mindful about how your brands and products are perceived. Be careful about what you say online and how you respond to a customer’s posted comments and concerns. Address any problems and clearly explain what went wrong.

Keep up the momentum. If you don’t find value initially, don’t give up, Gallucci advises. There’s no magical number for how long it takes to get traction. You need to give yourself enough time so you can build a following.

Washington D.C.’s Top Ten New and Anticipated Venues in 2011

1. The Hay-Adams Hotel Rooftop: with a panoramic view of the White House and downtown Washington, the new space opened in January after undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation. It features floor-to-ceiling windows, a wraparound terrace and has five additional separate rooms to for customized events for groups of 15 to 300.

2. Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel: Less than one mile from Reagan National, this space opened in March in the Arlington section of Crystal City. It features 15 meeting rooms with more than 17,000 square feet of meeting space.

3. Graffiato: A two-level restaurant seating 150 people will be Top Chef Contestant Mike Isabella’s first restaurant coming in the spring and offering an Italian-inspired menu. Groups can reserve the second level for events.

4. Lincoln: Recently opened this spring, this 210-seat space includes private dining, a main dining room and a bar area.

5. Todd Gray’s Watershed: this 6,500-square-foot restaurant space on the second floor of the Hilton garden Inn in Washington, D.C. will feature a seafood menu. Initial plans are for the dining room to sit 80 people including a 20-seat bar, a patio, and several banquet rooms to seat 165 people.

6. Fiola: Slated to open this Spring in the Penn Quarter, the 140-seat restaurant will offer what Chef Fabio Trabocchi calls "gourmet but accessible" menu that will a huge difference from what he offered at his previous restaurant, Maestro.

7. The Virtue Feed and Grain: Coming to the Town of Alexandria in the spring of 2011 will boast a two-level, 316-seat Irish-American pub with views of the Potomac River, Waterfront Park, Wales Ally, and Union Street with an additional 60 seats on the elevated deck on Wales Alley.

8. The Hirshhorn Bubble Museum: Designed by Diller Scofidio & Renfro of New York, is scheduled to open its new space on the mall sometime in 2011 but the 145-foot tall inflatable auditorium is scheduled to be inflated during the summer of 2012. Within the bubble, the courtyard will accommodate 500 to 800 seats for an array of public events.

9. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial: Designed by the Roma Design Group, the new $120 million is scheduled to open on August 28 featuring a 30-foot statue of Dr. King called the "Stone of Hope" created by sculptor Lei Yixin of China.

10. Italian Cinema/Italian Shirt Laundry: Mark Weiss, the restaurateur collaborating with ABDO Development will open two new Italian-themed restaurants in the 14th Street Corridor in late 2011, Italian Cinema and Italian Shirt Laundry. Stay tuned!

2011 ISES Northeast Regional Education Conference Recap

A few weeks ago I attended ISES Northeast Regional Education Conference (REC), which was hosted by the New Jersey South and Greater Philadelphia Chapters, for event professionals from throughout the Northeast Region and around the world at the Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.

This was an amazing conference: the education was great, the speakers inspiring and it was wonderful to see and networking with colleagues from near and as far as Sydney, Australia.

All the services and décor were donated by ISES members who all worked very hard to make this conference a success; but again, we never expect anything less from ISES members – we work hard, party harder and put out the best events! Moreover, we cannot forget to thank all the sponsors for all the in-kind contributions.

The opening luncheon was spearheaded by David Merrell, AOO Events who was fabulous and shared the newest design trends, which were all amazing. On Monday night, we enjoyed a fabulous luau with great food and entertainment at the beautiful Harrah’s Resort poolside. The conference concluded with a lavish brunch and a phenomenal presentation by Brett Culp where he shared his award-winning filmmaking approach as an effective and profitable marketing technique. He was brilliant!

How Meetings Benefit from Today’s Technologies

Five technologies that are changing meetings: Some tech-savvy planners are already employing to make their meetings more efficient and effective.

1. Mobile Apps: On a basic level, there are two types of mobile apps for events: a web-based program that might be accessed through an Internet-enabled phone, iPod or tablet, or downloadable software that runs natively on a specific device.

Two categories of mobile apps that are relevant to meetings:

Meetings management apps: Often free and provide planners the ability to tap into web-based meeting platforms from their mobile devices while on-site or in transit.

Meeting apps for attendees: Usually free, these event-specific apps can be downloaded by attendees. May include all of the speakers, scheduling, seminars, keynote and attendee information, exhibit floor maps and/or everything from social-media platform links to attendee messaging or local restaurant listings.

2. Social Media for Events: Social media facilitates interaction, networking, and a dialog among participants -- goals not unlike those of many meetings.

3. Virtual/Hybrid Events: from basic (and free) streaming options through full virtual show platforms and professional video production houses.

The Tea Tradition, Part II

I thought it would be nice to include a little more on the origins of tea after last week's post.

Tea in China:
It is impossible to know whether there is any truth to this story but tea drinking was popular in China many centuries before it had even been heard of in the West. Containers for tea have been found in tombs dating from the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), but it was under the Tang dynasty (618-906 AD) that tea became firmly established as the national drink of China. It became such a favorite that during the late Eighth Century a writer called Lu Yu wrote the first book entirely about tea, the Ch'a Ching, or Tea Classic.

Tea in Japan:
Tea was first introduced to Japan by Japanese Buddhist monks who had traveled to China to study. Tea drinking has become a vital part of Japanese culture, as seen in the development of the Tea Ceremony, which may be rooted in the rituals described in the Ch'a Ching.

Tea in Europe:
In 1560 A.D., the Portuguese missionary Jesuit Father Jasper de Cruz was the first European to encounter and write about tea. After its arrival in Portugal, it was shipped to Lisbon, then to France, Holland and the Baltic countries.

Tea Arrives in England:
Although we assume that tea originated in England and the British culture, it is interesting to find out that the first sample of tea reached England when Catherine de Braganza brought chests of it in her dowry for her marriage to Charles II in 1663. Charles and Catherine's affinity for tea quickly popularized it amongst the upper classes and the British tea trade began in earnest in the 1670's, thanks to the British East India Company. By 1880, afternoon tea had spread to the homes of the upper classes and to tea shops across the country. There were two types of tea traditions: low tea and high tea. Low tea was for the wealthy aristocrats. It was served elegantly with menus centered around small cakes, dainty sandwiches, assorted sweets, other gourmet tidbits and, of course, tea and where the emphasis was not only on presentation but conversation. Midway through the Industrial Revolution, working classes adopted a variation of high tea for themselves: a heavier meal served with tea at 5 PM, upon their return home from work and consisted of meats, vegetables and tea. The U.S. has a slightly different focus on some aspects of afternoon tea and the terms high and low teas have changed in today's society, as people often associate the term "high tea" with the wealthy and "low tea" with the working class.

The Tea Tradition

A unique event request I received this week was for a special tea for two by a fiancé who is planning to propose to his sweetheart on Valentine's Day. How sweet is that? This matches a request I received last year from a gentleman who wanted to serenade his wife at the office with a "Sing-A-Rama" to a Luther song.

Therefore, it is natural that this week's article will be about tea. Let's begin by looking at the History of Tea.

The Legendary Origin of Tea:
Although tea is typically thought of as being a British tradition, we have been drinking it for over 350 years. The story really begins in China. According to a legend of the Chinese Mythological Emperor Shen-Nung (a renowned herbalist and healer) was taking a break from his expedition, sat under a Camellia Sinensi tree while boiling drinking water when some leaves from the tree fell into the water. He decided to try the infusion, he liked what he tasted and felt energized very quickly. He therefore decided to collect some leaves in order to further experiment on them, which then resulted into the drink we now call tea.

Some Great Tea Facts:
• A cup of black tea has half the amount of caffeine of a cup of coffee.
• In one day, an experienced tea picker can collect around 70 pounds of tea! That's enough tea to make 14,000 cups!
• There are four main types of tea: white, green, oolong, and black. But depending on the influence of culture, these four types can turn into thousands of varieties.
• The most interesting of tea facts is that all tea comes from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis.
• Did you know that tea can help abate your appetite? Good news for people who are dieting.

• How many of you know that there is an Annual Coffee and Tea Festival in New York? This year's event will be on February 19th and 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and registration is now open.
• The evolution of the tea cup began in China and spread through Europe in the 17th century as a handle-free vessel. Chinese teacups had no handles and were held by the thumb and forefinger at the lip and base of the sup. European's intolerance of the hot temperature eventually led to the addition of the handle.
• During the 17th century, Mme de La Sabliere, a French hostess of an influential literary salon was credited for being among the first to add milk to tea.
• During both world wars, teacups helped denote status, as officers sipped from china, and enlisted troops drank from metal or tin cups.

I can't believe how fast 2010 has come to an end and it has been a year since my posting on the 2010 color trend! Well, the New Year is here and Pantone has announced the Pantone 2011 color of the year! It is the PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle!

Pantone says that it is "A Color for All Seasons! It is Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world. Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year. It's a color for every day – with nothing “everyday” about it."

They further state that while the 2010 color of the year, PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise, served as an escape for many, Honeysuckle emboldens us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor.

A dynamic reddish pink, Honeysuckle is encouraging and uplifting. It elevates our psyche beyond escape, instilling the confidence, courage and spirit to meet the exhaustive challenges that have become part of everyday life. In the November issue of M&C Magazine, Michael C. Lowe suggests the following 5 hot international cities to consider for your next destination event because they have seen recent developments in infrastructure, renovated hotels, meeting venues and transportation options. He also stated that planners will find myriad deals and affordable attractions to help keep budgets under control.

1. Cape Town, South Africa: http://www.southafrica.net
Cape Town sits on South Africa's southwestern coast with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and 3,562-foot-high Table Mountain on the other. This second most populous South African city is an international business hub with rugged wilderness around the corner.

Why Now? Because since she recently hosted the 2010 World Cup, Cape Town is bristling with new hotels and a citywide room count of around 32,000 including a strong infrastructure for meetings and convention at the currently expanding Cape Town International Convention Center. The city has held the International conference and Convention Association's top ranking spot for global gatherings in Africa and the Middle East for the past two years.

England's capital city is bursting with attractions ranging from the venerable Buckingham Palace to the vertiginous London Eye Ferris Wheel and to the ever-increasing supply of excellent hotels with state-of-the-art meeting facilities.

Why Now? Because in 2012, London will host the Olympic Games (for a record third time) and
where more than US 17 billion worth of development is taking place.

Found about midway down Mexico's western coast. This scenic region begins at the large, modern city of Nuevo Vallarta in the south and meanders up some 190 miles along the Pacific Ocean to the city of San Blas in the north. She offers pristine beaches, quaint fishing villages, eco-tourism excursions and more.

Why Now? This booming stretch of beautiful coast-line was dubbed the Riviera Nayarit just four years ago and is coming into its own as a tourism destination. They are planning to add 756 new hotel rooms this year and an additional 10,000 before 2015.

Medieval, Georgian and modern architecture coexist in beautiful contradiction in Ireland's capital. This bustling port city on the river Liffey is studded with landmarks, museums, art galleries and pubs, while just a few minutes away are seaside villages and rolling hillside.

Why now? With its three yearlong (and counting) economic struggle unfolding at the same time, some 3,000 new hotel rooms came online in the capital city, one result has been that nightly hotel rates in Dublin fell by 7 percent in the first six months of 2010 making it surprisingly affordable for groups.

5. Hyderabad, India: www.hicc.com
The capital of the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh in south-central India, Hyderabad is a relatively new destination for corporate travelers but has a rich 400-year history. The city is home to the Hyderabad International Convention Center, India’s largest, with a 65,750-square-foot main hall for up to 5,000 delegates and 32 additional meeting rooms. Adjacent is the 287-room Novotel Hyderabad Hotel, which opened in 2006.

Why Now? The city has been dubbed "Cyberabad" thanks to its thriving IT, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals industries. A burgeoning hotel sector has 12 new properties coming online in the next year, adding a total of 1,960 rooms to the city's skyline; with room rates generally remain reasonable. The city's many charms have been drawing events such as The International Congress and Convention Association's 49th annual Congress and Exhibition, held last October.

As we all know, social media is the next best thing since sliced bread, especially for marketing your business. However, simply joining one of these networks, attending networking events, collecting business cards and passing out yours are not going to magically build your business. You have to build relationships. The golden rule of thumb: "touch someone at least seven times" before it leads to any business.

The 2010 Not-So-Big Wedding Boutique and Challenge at the beautiful Rockwood Manor in Potomac, MD was a tremendous success and very well attended! The weather was fabulous and the teams did a fantastic job! The scores, which were based on a scale of 1 to 10, were very close.

Congratulations to Team Cinful lead by Cindy Jacobs who took the 1st prize with a total score of 58.50. The 2009 Challenge winner Team Carnevale, led by Janice Carnevale of Bellwether Events took the 2nd prize with a total score of 52.50 and in 3rd place was Team Cannon led by Kelley Cannon of Kelley Cannon Events with a total score of 48.25.

Destination Event: ME Time

Take one vacation four times a year and you could be saving your life (literally). When was the last time you took a vacation? Research shows that 34% of American workers do not use all of their vacation time. In 1992, a follow up to the Framingham Heart Study showed that participants who took the fewest holidays were most likely to suffer a heart attack. A study by the State University of New York, Oswego, published in 2000, tracked male patients at risk of heart disease over a 16-year period. "The results...," says lead researcher Brooks Gump, "...shows an association between taking an annual vacation and a reduced risk of heart attack and death." In Gump’s study, those who took fewer holidays were 30 percent more likely to die of a heart attack. Stress has also been shown to ignite or exacerbate ailments ranging from headaches to heart disease, colds to cancer

The good news is that getting away for a few days can be a clear benefit to your health. Vacations can run range from a do-nothing week on the beach, to a cultural and shopping tour of an exotic island, to a high-adrenaline adventure in Brazil. According to the experts, almost any type of holiday can benefit health to some degree because people tend to be happier, and sleeping longer and better while they're away can add a world of difference. After all, what a difference a day makes!

Here are some tips to a healthy escape:

A week is all you need: Trips of seven days or more are the most restorative. Taking fewer trips of longer duration is better for you than taking multiple mini-holidays.

Keep travel through time zones to a minimum: Jetlag is a form of stress and can undo most of the health benefits of getting away. If you want to get far away and return to the office refreshed and ready to work, travel north or south to avoid painful reentry. (Note: the time it takes to reach a destination neither diminishes nor increases the benefits of travel.)

Maximize your free time: Any type of commitment -- meeting with friends or family, checking e-mails, calling the office, or even following an itinerary -- will reduce the curative effects of travel. Freedom from obligations is key to a healthy vacation.

Choose a resort or cruise over a remote cabin in the woods: We might crave time alone, but making new acquaintances has been shown the increase the restorative power of a vacation. So go ahead and attend the manager’s cocktail party -- it's good for you.

Get off your beach chair: You'll feel more rejuvenated if you incorporate a moderate amount of physical activity (regular walking tours or other light exercise) into your vacation than if you spend the whole time lounging.

Keep it warm and light: We don't need scientific research to figure this one out, but studies confirm that in general, staying in a sunny destination provides greater health benefits than staying in one that has shorter days.

We get stuck in ruts. Vacations can help us develop healthy patterns to carry into our lives. Go out and explore! Your body and mind will thank you for it.

Insurance Coverage: To Have, or Not to Have?

I thought that this would be a great topic to cover because Fall is officially here and old Mr. Winter will soon be popping his head out; and if this winter is anything like last years' that resulted in numerous event cancellations, you do not want be unprepared!

Whether you are in the special event industry or any other business, it is imperative to protect your business and have insurance coverage especially in today’s litigious society where lawsuits are on the rise with every dawn. We can face potential lawsuits from customers, contractors, attendees, and spectators. Even if the lawsuit is unfounded, the cost of defense will be expensive.

Although the special event planning industry appears to be a glamorous job, it is unfortunately quite the contrary; it is a very hectic, tiring, and occasionally a very trying job. God forbid if some unfortunate mishap ensues and the event planner is sued! It is therefore imperative that everyone in the event management industry carry General Liability and E&O coverage. The latter is sometimes debatable but I personally feel it is essential.

Coverage typically protects against liability claims for bodily injuries, property damage, cancellation, rescheduling, or any accidents that might occur from the set-up time, to during the event, and during the breakdown at the end of the event.

However, just as with other insurance policies, event insurance coverage must be carefully selected. Shop around to compare rates and plans and make sure you ask many questions, read through your policies to fully understand your coverage and read the fine print! Be sure that you are covered for the entire management process and/or tailor it to your specific needs. Apply the same steps as you would when purchasing your health insurance, life insurance and/or other benefits. If you cannot afford an annual coverage, some agencies have à la carte options. Whatever package you select, having insurance coverage will not only give you peace of mind but also protect you from setting yourself up for lawsuits that will lead you down bankruptcy lane.

Selecting the Date for Your Next Event

When planning any event, many factors have to be taken into consideration, as they can affect the outcome of the event. Sometimes these factors work in your favor, and other times they do not. However, in order to plan a successful event, here is a short list of some key considerations:

Computer and Cell Phone Backups

Love them when they work, hate them when they don't, and hate them even more when they crash!

A few weeks ago, I received a message that BlackBerry had new updates for my phone. However, since I had not synchronized nor backed up my data since the month of May, I thought it would be wise to do so first. Now, you would think that from prior experience (when my laptop crashed) I would be more deligent in backing up my data. Right? Unfortunately, not! I kept putting it off each day saying to myself, "As soon as I'm done with this, I'll synch my phone!" How many of you are guilty of this as well?

Anyhow, I proceeded to perform a synch/backup only to learn that I could not do so prior to updating my phone. After numerous attempts to skip the update, I gave up. The update did not take long and when it was done, I said, "WOW! I love the new updates! And, I sooo love my BlackBerry even more now!" ...only to realize a little later, that I lost everything I had enterred since the last backup in May! I was livid and angry with myself for not continuing to backup on a weekly basis! Lesson learned the hard way!

Thankfully, after my laptop crashed and after Geek Squad recovered some files, I put new systems in place to ensure everything is backed up on my external hard drive and looked into off-site backup services. Consequently, even if my computer crashes again, I will still have all my data somewhere. Now, I just need to make sure that the same preventative measures are in place for my cell phone.

With that said, I thought that this would be a worthy topic to blog.

Having a reliable backup system is very crucial in running a business; even more so now than ever before with Green Initiatives in place and many people not printing much. Another plus to off-site backups is that even if your place of business burns down, you will still have access to your data.

For a reasonable fee, several companies provide backup services off site on a secure online database.

Computer Backups
Here are a couple companies you can consider:

1. Carbonite: For just $54.95 per year (about $4.58 per month), Carbonite securely protects your files from

accidental deletion
drive failure
theft
power surges
disaster

2. MOZY: For $4.95 per month for personal computers and $5.00 per month for businesses, they will provide the same services as the aforementioned company.

Cell Phone Backups
Whether you lose, break or simply replace your phone for a new one, you may encounter problems with tranfesrring your phone book and other data. Again, as with computers, there are several ways to backup your cell phone data:

1. Provider/Carrier-specific services: Alltell, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel, etc.

2. Third-party backup services: Backup-Pal, Cell Stik, and DataPilot Universal Plus to name a few.

3. Finally, there are various Apps (some free, others not) that you can download directly onto your smart phone... got-to love those Apps! These will backup the info on an ongoing basis.

Do not become the next statistic... take charge! It is worth every penny and your peace of mind!

When you hear "Christmas in July," it can only mean two things: a party with a winter/holiday theme or a great sale!

Whether it be in our business or private lives, it is very easy to get overwhelmed with our day-to-day activities and actually forget to be thankful. I am therefore celebrating "Thanksgiving in July" by listing reasons why I am thankful for my business and all those who support my endeavors in one way or another, especially my family, friends, fans, clients, and colleagues.

10 things I am thankful for:
1. My business: It makes a world of a difference to wake up everyday and go to a job I love and enjoy.
2. That I can set my own hours: Even though I may work very long hours, most evening, weekends and some seasons are busier than others, I have a flex schedule.
3. My fabulous vendors that repeatedly come through for me with every event.
4. My volunteers and IC's who stick by me regardless of the arduous hours.
5. The wonderful connections and business relationships I have developed along the way, of which many have become good friends.
6. The different places I have traveled to because of my business.
7. The technology enabling my office to be mobile.
8. Social Media: My Facebook fans, my Twitter Followers, my Blog Followers, and my LinkedIn Connections.
9. My wonderful family and friends whose love and support keep me going, especially during the most trying times.
10. And, lastly but certainly not the least, I thank God for affording me this wonderful life and opportunity.

AAHF Recap

As you know from our previous post, the African American Heritage Festival kicked off its 9th Annual event June 18 -20th in Baltimore, Maryland. Programming enriched the community and visitors to the city of Baltimore over the three day event.

This year was the first for Events2Remember, Inc. to partner with the festival in providing the elegant décor for the exclusive VIP cabanas flanked on either side of the main stage.

What a treat to be able to experience the entertainment on the stage from such a comfortable and convenient location. We enjoyed musical performances by Robin Thicke, Donnie McClurkin, Fantasia, Patti Labelle, and many more. Definitely the best seats in the house! The festival offered a family friendly experience in celebrating the rich culture and history of African Americans.

"Day of" vs. "Month of" Coordinating/Plannning Services

Semantics or not … here’s yet another debatable topic.

First, although it appears as such, it is important to understand that an event planner is not a party planner and is definitely not simply a decorator. They are professional event planners because they have the education, the resources, the experience, the network, and reliable alliances in the industry.

The professional planner focuses on the client’s objective and ensures it is seamlessly achieved by paying attention to all the details that lead up to the event for all weddings, corporate, social and fundraising events.

We must therefore understand both the definition and the nature of work associated with the different titles used in the industry:

1. Event Planner: A professional who plans special events and is responsible for the event from conceptualization to orginization and execution of the entire event. They will custom design the event and make appropriate suggestions and recommendations based on the clients vision, needs and budget. They will assist with venue searches and acquisition, vendor referals and recommendations, ettiquette advisement, budget advisement and maintenance, logisitcs maintenance, make, and implement design recommendations and assist with menu recommendations and selection. They will also ensure that the client complies with all state and federal legalities for any licenses and permits that may be required for the event as well as ensure that all political and social protocols are adhered to.

Planners will have several meetings with their client throughout the planning process, they are not only there during set-up, but are there from beginning to end to of the event to handle any problems that may arise, and oversee the breakdown as well. These are just a few of the many responsibilities of a professional special event planner.

2. Event Consultant: The American Heritage dictionary defines consultant as "one who gives expert advice." In the event planning industry, consulting and planning are in most cases synonyms of each other with minor differences in what their "comprehensive" package offers.

3. Event Coordinator: A coordinator orchestrates the event. However, it is a miss-conception and a miss understanding that a coordinator just shows up on the day of the event and "makes things happen." Typically, the coordinator will have a specific number of meetings (contractual agreement) with their client, get a list of all the vendors and their contacts, construct a time line, have a vendor rehearsal, and finally execute the event on the day of. Yes, a planner/consultant can also be a coordinator.

Now that we have clarified the definition and responsibilities of a planner, is "Day of" or "Month of" the proper "term" for this service? Or, should we coin a different term/phrase for it? Remember, most event professionals will not take on “Day of” jobs less than 3-4 months prior to the event. Therefore, "Month of" may be more fitting regarding the scope of the services. The African American Heritage Festival

Once again, it is time for the 9th annual African American Heritage Festival (AAHF). It will take place in Baltimore, Maryland at M&T Bank Stadium (Lots B & C) June 18-June 20, 2010 and Events2Remember, Inc. is partnering with the festival this year! The African American Heritage Festival is an annual family celebration of the history, culture, education, heritage, and arts that
embraces and promotes the rich traditions and zestful spirit of the city of Baltimore. The festival is free before 4pm and $5 after 4pm. Children 12 and under are free anytime, all weekend.

Founded in 2001, the African American Heritage Festival has become one of the premiere Atlantic-coast summer festivals offering patrons a wide array of events. "Newbies" and "Wannabes"

As of January 2010, this has become the new “hot topic” in many articles, blogs, and networking discussions in the event planning industry. However, this topic is not specific to event planners only, but to everyone in the event industry from caterers to florists, from deejays to photographers, from videographers to designers, and from coordinators to consultants.

Although this is not a new phenomenon, in the recent years we are really seeing an influx of emerging planners. Is it due to the current economic conditions or the hype of the industry being a glitzy and glamorous one? Clearly, without truly understanding the hard work and details that go into planning an event, one sees the final product and assumes that it is an easy and glamorous career.

First, let us differentiate the term “Newbies” from “Wannabes.” A “Newbie” refers to newcomers into the industry. Typically, they have the education; they may or may not have some practicum hours under their belt and are in their first year in business. A “Wannabe,” on the other hand, has done nothing much towards establishing themselves as real professionals, has no education and usually has minimal or no experience in the industry

I would like to emphasize that seasoned planners have nothing against “Newbies.” After all, all planners were once “Newbies” themselves.

Are they driving down the price structure? Yes, they probably are, and undercutting prices is a major problem. However, remember the saying, "What you pay, is what you get,” and consequently, seasoned planners should not feel that they have to compromise their brand and/or service parameters because of fear of losing a potential client to a “Newbie” or “Wannabe.” Another major concern to seasoned planners is when some “Newbies” and “Wannabes” blatantly copy/lift contents (verbatim) and pictures from their websites and use it as their own.

The truth is, it is not so much the threat or fear of the influx of “Newbies” and “Wannabes” that is the main concern for seasoned planners, but the lowering prices and standards and the blatant use of other planners ‘sweat and blood’ by some of these “Newbies” and “Wannabes.” What do you think?

Wedding Song Choices

Wedding season is upon us and like everything else in the process, song selection is an equally important part.

The First Dance:
For some couples, selecting the song for their first dance is easy because they have “their song,” while for others it may be a daunting task. So, how does a couple select their song for their first dance from the endless myriads of song choices available today?

This is a very personal but imperative process. The most important factor to take into consideration when choosing any song is that the song has to be meaningful to you as a couple. It can have sentimental value or it can simply be something fun. Whatever it is, make sure you both like the song. Do not choose a song because it is popular or because other people will like it; your wedding day is about the two of you and not the other people. Additionally, although traditionally the first dance is a slow tempo, it doesn't have to be! Nor does it have to be one song, it can be a medley of songs.

Another important consideration is the lyrics of the song. Many couples pick “popular” songs without really understanding the lyrics and meaning of the song. One needs to take time to listen and understand the lyrics because there are times when lyrics have undertones and connotations subject to different interpretations. If you are not sure of the lyrics of a song, Google them!

Finally, do not pick a song that you will be uncomfortable dancing in the presence of parents and grandparents.

Whatever the choice, it has to be “yours” and remember that people will associate it as “your” song whenever they hear it.

Examples of song choices to be mindful of when selecting your first dance:

My Heart Will Go On (Titanic soundtrack) by Celine Dion … it is indeed about endless love but after the other person has died.

Lady in Red (Soundtrack) by Chris De Burgh is really about a prostitute. In a real life story of the 1930’s, this was the color worn by a prostitute when she went to the movies with her “date” (a dangerous criminal named John Herbert Dillinger ) to help police identify/capture him leading to his death.

Every Breath You Take by Sting seems very ‘stalkerish’ if you really listen to the words.

Although optional, many couples have other dances as part of their wedding reception and it is therefore equally important that these song selections be appropriate as well. Examples:

The Grand Entrance song:
This song is played when the bridal party and the couple make their “grand entrance” into the reception area. This can be anything from traditional to a non-traditional upbeat song. For some, this leads into the couples first dance.
Father-Daughter song:
As the title suggests, this is the dance between the bride and her father.
The cake cutting song:
This is optional but some couples like to have a song – either another one of “their” songs or an upbeat song.
The song for bouquet and garter tossing:
Again, be sure to select the appropriate song to encourage participation.
The bridal party dance song:
This is usually the last of the formal dance songs before the party begins and includes the entire bridal party.
The last dance song:
This can be the last dance for the night or it can be the last dance song for the bride and groom as they leave the reception while the guest continue to celebrate.

Wearable Art/Un-Wearable Fashion

On Friday, April 9th I had the opportunity to attend the opening reception for the Wearable Art/Un-Wearable Fashion exhibit at the VisArts Center in Rockville, Maryland. The exhibit featured some beautiful, unique pieces of art, all of which push the boundaries of fashion to innovative heights!

I also had the opportunity to meet one of the artists -- Martin Figueroa-Ramirez of RōM. His sneaker designs are amazing examples of "wearable art" and are a must-see! Here are some pictures of Figueroa-Ramirez and his work:

Wearable Art/Un-Wearable Fashion will be on display until June 19, 2010 so be sure to check it out if you live near or will be visiting the DC Metro Area!

The VisArts facilities are also available as a rental space for special events! The event room, gallery area, rooftop, and learning center are all spectacular areas and the four spaces can accommodate anywhere from 25 to 300 guests!

"What to Do with Leftover Wedding Food?"

I recently read a blog article via Slashfood that highlighted some practical uses for leftover wedding food. The article is from last June, but I couldn't resist sharing! Here's a brief synopsis:

"Most caterers will over-estimate the amount of food you'll need for your happy nuptials... So what do you do with all of those leftovers? You've paid for the food, and it really is a shame to see it go to waste."

I find that this is often the case with functions (whether it be a wedding or any other special event) that offer a buffet selection instead of a sit-down dinner. The article suggests donating the food to a local food bank, or allowing your out-of-town guests to pack a "doggy bag" to take back to their hotel room. Overall, I thought the brief article made a great point and you should try to keep these options in mind if you find yourself faced with the dilemma of too much food!

RSVP Etiquette

The Meaning: The term RSVP comes from the French expression “réspondez s’il vous plaît,” which means “please respond.”

What it does not mean: RSVP does not mean, “respond only if you are coming,” nor does it mean, “respond only if you are not coming.” “Regrets only” is the term for the latter instance.

The Importance of RSVP: responding to an invitation assists in --
• Planning for minimum requirements for hotel room blocks
• Planning for banquet halls and breakout room requirements
• Planning for printed material
• Planning for place settings
• Determining the number of servers and bartenders required
• Planning for food and beverage quantities
• Planning for swag bags and/or party favors
• Determining dance floor size requirements
• Floor plan layout
• Finalizing programs
and much, much more…

6 RSVP Etiquette Tips:
1. If an invitation includes an RSVP, all guests are obligated to respond by the specified date on the invitation.
2. If there is no “reply by” date, the general rule of thumb is to respond within 24 to 48 hours of receipt.
3. If a social invitation does not include an RSVP, it is still considered polite to respond accordingly.
4. All business and/or non-profit events require a response. If you are making a charitable contribution but not attending the event, RSVP appropriately and do not attend unannounced.
5. In keeping with today’s Greening efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, an invitation may come via email (try Evite). You are still obligated to respond within 24 to 48 hours of receipt if there is no "reply by" date.
6. For the more formal events that choose to send invitations via snail mail but opt to set up an RSVP online (try My RSVP Live), telephone, or a personalized website, be sure to respond within 24 to 48 hours of receipt if there is no "reply by" date.

Who Should RSVP?:
1. If you are sending a representative(s) to corporate and non-profit events, the RVSP should specify whom and/or how many are attending on your behalf.
2. For social and private events, all invitees must RSVP.
3. If the invitation allows for extra guests, and you intend on bringing additional people, be sure to indicate how many extra people will be accompanying you. Typically, it is polite to add no more than 2 extra people per invitation.

Final Tips:
• Be sure to communicate all last-minute changes.
• Be sure to communicate any conflicting events and respond by the specified date.
• Be sure to communicate any special dietary requirements well in advance. Remember, this is different from dietary preferences.
• Arrive on time.
• Dress appropriately and in keeping with the theme of the event. (i.e. Black-tie, formal, business etc.)
• Network and Enjoy!

Nametag Protocols

Q: If name tags/badges are used instead of a lanyard, do you know what side to pin it on?
A: The right side.

After some research, here is what I discovered:

Per the Etiquette Diva Emily Post: "Although it is easier for right handed people to put a name badge on the left side, they correctly are worn on the right side so the person shaking hands or greeting has easy eye contact with both the person and the badge as a way to help remember the name or to see where he/she is from, etc. This is the purpose of wearing the badges in the first place."

However, per Scott Ginsberg:

There isn't a single book on networking, meeting planning or interpersonal communication that doesn't say nametags should go on the right... [they] say you should wear your nametag on the right hand side so it is visible in the direct line with your handshake. For the most part, I agree. And so do most people. This is one of the few nametag protocols most people are familiar with.
On the other hand, the horizontal placement of your nametag should be dependent on the capacity in which you are wearing it. For example, if you work in a hotel, in retail, at a trade show or any other mobile environment where there are aisles, rows and hallways, consider the possibility of wearing your nametag on the left side of your chest so it is most visible to oncoming traffic. (If you live in a country where you walk on the right side of the path.)
Now, this is a debatable issue. But the bottom line about horizontal placement is this: it doesn't matter which side of your chest the nametag lays, as long as it's above your breastbone and readable from 10 feet away.

We were honored to be on the guest list last week and we really enjoyed the space, food and music. To sum it up: a beautiful, classy, sexy, and great addition to Baltimore, as this is something you would typically see in DC, New York, or California!

"We all know it is important to acquire that client that will not only appreciate your services but reflect your company's brand. But we know that bills come in every month and you can't respond to your electric bill, "Sorry, my target client didn't hire me this month." So, what's a small business , fighting the poor economy and rising expenses to do?"

Her Advice:
1) First be sure you aren't lowering your "brand" standards so much that you are putting yourself and your business in jeopardy.
2) Do not work for free. Do not work for free. Do not work for free.
3) Set clear boundaries and limitations so that you will not be taken advantage of and still make a profit.
And,
4) Know that you are not alone. Not every wedding is dripping with Phalaenopsis orchids and crystals from the ceiling. But it is okay.

I totally agree with Ms. Hadley. This holds true for any event type: be it a corporate, wedding, social or private event and, is even more prevalent in today's economy as budgets are lowered but expectations are still high. So, what is the solution? This is where our expertise and creativity as Special Event Planners comes into play.

Lately, I’ve been getting many questions about formal attire from the 'gents. They stated that be it a wedding, corporate, or social event the women run out and buy a new dress and accessories... so they asked, shouldn’t they, too, run out and buy a new suit? And, the next question was obvious: what should they buy?

Style is a very personal thing and careful consideration should be taken when purchasing and/or renting. Try not to go with something just because it is in style or because your favorite public personality is wearing it. Take your friends and make a shopping event out of it. If it is a wedding, involve your fiancee and get all the particulars about the bridal party style and colors.

Understanding event dress codes requires an education in sartorial elegance and for the dapper gents, its all in the details and the accessories. Typically, there are five categories -- Black Tie, Formal, Semi-Formal, Cocktail, and Business:

• Black Tie: The rule of thumb is that it calls for a bow tie. However, you can always put on your best black tie. For the younger guys who don’t like regular ties, you can put on your favorite skinny black tie. A tuxedo with satin lapels, classic notch, and black buttons with a classic white shirt is recommended as it is versatile for weddings to formal events.

• Formal: This is the traditional term or sometimes a synonym for black tie. A tuxedo, a black velvet jacket, formal dark three-piece suit or a standard dark suit will work. Again, stick to the classic white shirt. Today, traditional/cultural garb is also accepted as formal attire.

• Semi-Formal: This is the most difficult of the categories as it covers a broad range, but the rule of thumb is to steer clear from black, which as previously addressed, denotes formal and black tie. This can be anything from traditional/cultural attire, pinstripes, white jacket, regular suit and tie, sweater or blazer with trousers or dress jeans, to khakis and white pants in the summer.

• Cocktail: These events are usually in the evening and are not a sit-down affair. Typically, it allows for finger food, drink in-hand and working the room to mingle with the guests. You can jazz up your regular black suit with attention to your accessories for example, a pocket square, a tie bar, a vest, or substitute the suit jacket with a blazer.

• Business attire: This means the event is happening immediately after work and guests are coming straight from the office. Any nice suit will work although grays are highly recommended.

This article will not be complete without addressing the shirt and accessories. This is where ladies understand that, no matter how beautiful the outfit, what you wear underneath and how you accessorize will either make or break the outfit. This holds true for men as well. Consequently, selecting the appropriate dress shirt and accessories for any occasion will add to the finish look of your suit.

There are three must have shirts:

• Basic White: This is now a favorite among many and every man should have one crisp, white cotton shirt with a collar and cuffs. This extremely versatile shirt can go from office to formal wear by simply changing the color of the suit and accessories. Another must have white shirt is one with a French cuff, which when worn with a nice pair of cufflinks, gives you that haute couture look.

• Solid Colors: Most solid colors and/or neutral toned shirts will work well with any suit and tie in your wardrobe and can dress you either up or down. For example, you can dress up a pair of jeans with a nice solid shirt, which looks great inside any suit. By far the most popular solid color is the light blue shirt, which looks great with any suit, jeans, and skin tone.

• Pinstripe: This is another great versatile shirt whereby any color or stripe will do well for work or play, although caution must be taken when selecting a tie. Generally, a solid tie works best.

Last, but equally important are the accessories:

• These are the finishing intricacies to give you that GQ and/or haute couture look! Articles such as silver cufflinks, white pocket square, skinny leather belt, wingtips, and tie bar will set you apart from the rest of the herd at any event.

The above is just a basic guideline; however, there are many other details to consider such as: jacket lapels, shirt collars, pant cuffs, jacket breasts, buttons and more that go into selecting and putting together of a great and versatile wardrobe. Fortunately, there are many expert helping hands in today's men's formal wear stores to assist you.

Remarriages: Trends, Etiquette, and Resources

Remarriage Trends

These days, remarriages after divorce is more common. According to a 2002 study by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, statistics show:

• 54 percent of divorced women remarry within 5 years
• 75 percent of divorced women remarry within 10 years
• Black women are the least likely to remarry
• White women are the most likely to remarry

However, a new 2007 report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that in 2004 (the year of the study):
• 12 percent of men and 13 percent of women had married twice
• 3 percent each had married three or more times
• 58 percent of women and 54 percent of men 15 and older had married only once

Social stigma dictates that second marriages should not be formal, extravagant or elaborate celebrations, but rather quiet and small ones. The importance should be placed in the fact that it is still the celebration of the union of two people who have found one another, love each other, and have a chance at life filled with joy, happiness, and that “happily ever after” that everyone deserves.

Second Marriage Etiquette Guidelines:

This may vary from one culture to another.
Please remember to be respectful of all traditions.

• Announcements: before officially and formerly announcing the engagement, it is important that if there are children involved, they should be the first to know. Followed by parents and the ex-spouse. Then, if the couple so chooses, via the newspaper, email or engagement party.

• Engagement Party: no rules, although typically not hosted by the parents or the couple. Most couples choose to have a small intimate dinner out with friends and family instead of having a party.

• Invitations: these can be simple, or elegant and elaborate but should be in theme with the wedding style.

• Whom to invite: etiquette dictates that the former in-laws and ex-spouses, no matter how close they may be, should not be invited.

• Bridal Showers: this is optional and again, there are no hard and fast rules; but it is recommended that it be small and intimate affair for very close friends. As in the first marriage, only those attending the ceremony and reception should be invited to the shower. Do not invite anyone that isn’t invited to the wedding. It is typically hosted by the bridal party. Those invited to the first wedding shower should not be invited to the second and if they are, they are not obligated to bring a gift.

• Gift Giving: these couples are typically already established in life and have accumulated more things than those in their first marriage. If they have not registered and already have a house, it is advisable to give them elegant crystal or china or make a donation to their favorite charity.

• The Wedding Dress: there is no hard and fast rule about not wearing a wedding dress and with the infinite choices available these days, there are many styles to choose from. Remember, it is your day and you want to look beautiful. Th bride can wear any color even white, as it no longer only symbolizes purity.

• Bridal party: it is optional, not necessary, to have attendants, a processional, or someone to walk you down the aisle.

• Rehearsal Dinner: optional.

• Ceremonies and Vows: can be civil or religious. If both bride and groom have children, be sure to involve them in the ceremony if they want to be included. There are many unique ways to incorporate children in the wedding for example: lighting a family unity candle versus the traditional one, unity sand pouring ceremony, escort down the aisle, being one of the attendants or doing a reading, and more. You can personalize your vows to include the children, if you have any. If it is a religious ceremony, be sure to check with your officiant as to what might be different from the first marriage vows.

• Reception: can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. Many couples choose to omit the tossing of the bouquet and garter. The receiving line includes the couple and their children, if they have any. Some of the more traditional toasts may be omitted.

• Honeymoon: yes, you may still go on a honeymoon. If both couples have children, you might like to consider a honeymoon that will include the children -- a “FamilyMoon,” a term coined back in 2004. The latter has been a growing trend for many couples who want honeymoons to include their children, which makes for good bonding experiences. New Orleans and TSE

I was in New Orleans for this year's The Special Event Show (TSE) this past January, and I'd like to share the amazing experience! I thought I should start with a little history of the amazing city of New Orleans, which is still recovering from the devastating Katrina.

Founded in 1718, New Orleans is located in southeast Louisiana between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. In 1722, it became the capital of a French colony and later passed to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.

This is an amazing and magical city with a rich history and blend of cultures. The city is a real “Gumbo” of French, Spanish, Caribbean, Haitian and African influences -- the street names are French and Spanish; blends of exotic spices are used in the cuisine; there is beautiful, colorful architecture; it is birthplace of jazz and Zydeco; the home of “Mardi Gras” as well as the ever intriguing voodoo.

The city's symbol is the Fleur-de-Lis (as seen in the logo above). It means “flower of the Lilly” and is a symbol of royalty in France that signifies perfection, light, and life. To learn more about New Orleans, please visit the city's official website.

This diverse city certainly has plenty to offer from the historical sights to great food and entertainment -- from the famous Bourbon Street in the French Quarters, to Magazine Street in the Warehouse Arts District; from a walk along the Riverwalk Market Place to see the breathtaking Mississippi River to the Cities of the Dead (cemeteries of ornate vaults and family crypts of pirates, politicians and voodoo queens).

However, the visit would not have been complete without visiting and experiencing Harrah’s Hotel and asino!

This year TSE was hosted at the Ernest N. Memorial Convention Center in New Orleans situated along the beautiful Mississippi Riverfront.

The festivities were jazzed up with the grand entrance of a traditional New Orleans Marching Jazz Band, a Gospel Choir, award and recognition ceremony, and a comedy act.

The Luncheon: The musical entertainment by The Soul Rebels uplifted us with a myriad of intrinsic sounds and songs. Their music is a unique blend of Mardi Gras funk, soft rock, and reggae. They have a hip-hop sensibility combined with one hundred years of New Orleans jazz tradition.

The Lunch Menu:

First Course: Cucumber Wrap Salad: organic lettuces with sliced Creole tomatoes, Mississippi chevre and sweet basil infusion.

Second course: Abita Beer Braised Bison Short ribs accompanied by baby root vegetables with an asiago and white truffle polenta cake.

Third Course: Nontraditional Wedding cake -- vanilla cake with toasted almond cream set with a mixed berry compote.

And finally, we could not leave without our annual CC’ers face-to-face meet-up which was at The Bourbon House in the French Quarters for cocktails, food, and a stroll down the ever so lively Bourbon Street! Check out the tab… that’s what happens when Diva’s meet for an evening!

The Color of the Year -- 2010

Color is very personal. Everyone has a favorite color and can relate to it from the time they were little children. Certain emotions are associated with color, and planners and designers know that using color is very important to create that “bang” or “pop” you are looking for when you walk into a room. First, I'd like to go over the basics of color before I reveal Pantone's Color of the Year for 2010.

As you may remember from elementary school, there are three main categories of color:

1. Primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. These are pure and cannot be created through the mixing of any other colors.

2. Secondary colors: orange, purple, and green. These are produced by mixing of primary colors. i.e. yellow + blue = green; blue + red = purple; and red + yellow = orange.

3. Tertiary colors: A combination of primary and secondary colors. There are six tertiary colors: red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet.

Additionally, colors fall into three schematic groups:

1. Monochromatic colors: all colors, tints and shades of a single hue. They go well together, are easy on the eyes, and have a soothing effect.

2. Analogous colors: these are in close proximity to each other on the color wheel and always made up of three colors, the main one being red, plus two neighboring colors. They are similar in hue and saturation.

3. Complimentary colors: usually comprised of two colors that are opposite of the color wheel and are high in contrast.

So, who comes up with the color trends from year to year, you ask?

My first post today focused on the history of Valentine's Day, which is only one week away! As we all know, Valentine's Day is a very popular date for marriage proposals. In this post, I'd like to offer some tips on shopping for that perfect ring!

However, it is equally important to understand the terminology used in evaluating the quality of the diamond and/or fine jewelry. The History of Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day only one week away, I thought it would be interesting to share the story behind Valentine's Day. The following has been paraphrased from The History Channel.

Every February, across the world, St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated. Cards, gifts, candies, and flowers are exchanged. However, it also known that it is the month that many engagement rings are purchased and marriage proposals are made. So, how exactly did this holiday come about? Why is it celebrated in February?

Who was St. Valentine?

One belief is that Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome under Emperor Claudius II (around 270 A.D). Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than married ones and banned them from getting married. However, Valentine who felt that this was an unjust law, continued to perform marriages in secret. When the Emperor found out, he sentenced Valentine to death.

The second belief is that when Valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love with a young girl who used to visit him. It is alleged that before his death, he wrote her a letter, signed off “From your Valentine” and was therefore the first one to send a valentines letter.

Other stories suggest that Valentine was been killed because he helped Christians who were in Roman captivity.

Why we celebrate Valentine's Day

It is believed that Valentine's Day is celebrated to commemorate Valentine’s death, while others believe that the church decided to celebrate it on February 15 to coincide with the ancient Roman Lupercalia Festival. The latter was a pagan fertile festival dedicated to the Roman god of agriculture, Faunus and the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. It marked the beginning of spring where they would purify their houses by sweeping and sprinkling them with salt and spelt.

For all who love and/or have family, friends, colleagues, or clients that love rock, get ready to re-experience Jimi Hendrix from the vault of studio and live tapes that were previously unreleased.

"Valley of Neptune, containing a dozen tracks will be released on March 9th to kick off Sony/Legacy's massive reissue campaign," as stated by Edna Gundersen of USA Today. His 11th studio album -- the eighth to be issued posthumously and first since 1980 -- includes studio recorded Mr. Bad Luck intended for 1968's Axis: Bold as Love release. Per Gundersen, also included is a frenzied Fire, the long-coveted title track; a sprawling cover of Cream's Sunshine of Your Love; and such re-tooled originals as Lover Man, Red House, and Crying Blue Rain. Along with his longtime engineer Eddie Kramer, we marvel at what Jimi Hendrix might have achieved had he not died at the young age of 27 in 1970.

New Year, New Finds

I hope that the year is off to a good start for everyone -- 2009 was a great year, but I honestly believe that 2010 will be even better!

In trying to decide which route to go with my second blog of the year, I concluded that a whimsical post with some neat finds would be a welcoming change after Wednesday's holiday post. So, here goes… ENJOY!

1. Need an umbrella or parasol for your event? Did you know that if you did not want to purchase, they are available for rent? You must be asking what the difference is between the two – right?

Well, according to Wiki: Umbrella is another synonym for the term parasol, which was first used as a protection against the scorching heat of the sun, "para" meaning stop or shield and "sol" meaning sun. The word "umbrella" has evolved from the Latin "umbella" (and "umbel" is a flat-topped rounded flower) or "umbra," meaning "shaded."

In addition, in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and India they were used to protect important people from the sun. They were often large and held by bearers, and they served as marks of honor and authority for the wearer (Encyclopedia Britannica).

Holiday Spirit at the Gaylord National

It's been some time since my last blog post -- I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and the New Year. If you didn't get a chance to visit the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in the DC Metro Area during the holidays this season, mark your calendar for December 2010; it's a must-see!

The 18-story glass atrium of the resort was beautifully decorated with over two million twinkling lights. 150-foot light banners that replicated the colors of the Northern Lights were hung from the ceiling. A fountain show choreographed to Christmas music was also located in the atrium, as was an indoor holiday train village.

The space would not be complete, however, without the spectacular 60-foot Christmas tree made from candy-like glass that was dangling from the atrium ceiling. The tree was lit every evening at 6PM and an indoor snowfall turned the atrium into a winter wonderland.

And then there was "ICE!" -- a 15,000 square foot pavilion containing sculptures of penguins, polar bears, reindeer, gas-lit lampposts, replicas of some of Washington, DC's landmarks, four ice slides, Santa's workshop, and a beautiful nativity scene all made out of ice. The sculptures are amazingly maintained at a chilly 9 degrees, so be sure to dress warm if you plan to visit.

All I can say is that the Gaylord is an amazing venue, and kudos to all involved in creating such a magnificent holiday atmosphere.

The Scary Guy & Bullying in Schools

Are you tired of tuning in to your favorite radio or TV station to listen to the news and all you hear about is all the violent things happening around us? – in our families, communities and the world as a whole? This is why I believe that we need more people like The SCARY GUY, a motivational speaker and advocate who was back in the DC Metro Area on Tuesday, December 15, 2009. It was my second time meeting him (see my October Events post for more info), and I was happy to get the chance to learn more about his cause.

He is an incredible speaker and truly committed to his cause -- “A New Effort for the Elimination of Anger, Hate, Violence, and Death worldwide, with A Wake-Up Call to Change the mindset of the World.” The SCARY GUY (pictured above with Cathryn Woodhall, Director of Curriculum Development Worldwide) advocates against bullying and violence in schools, and specializes in youth empowerment.

If leaders, teachers, parents, anyone, and everybody could just hear his message and try to incorporate his program, a planned curriculum that focuses on eliminating bullying, in our schools and communities, we will be able to reduce and eventually eliminate all the bullying, hate, anger, violence, and death that are so prevalent in our society today. The Embassy of Kenya/The Omni Shoreham Hotel - Washington, D.C.

On Friday, December 12th, The Embassy of Kenya in Washington, D.C. hosted their Independence Day Celebration, known as Jamhuri Day, at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, D.C. The event kicked off with a message from H.E. Ambassador Peter Ogego followed by a delicious dinner and entertainment by Cold Spring Elementary School Chorus, who sang a number of holiday songs, and a Kenyan Gospel Choir group from Atlanta who sang in Swahili to the beat of African drums. The Omni Shoreham is a beautiful four-diamond hotel and is conveniently located on Calvert Street in NW Washington, DC. It would be an excellent venue for any special event! Here are some pictures from the gorgeous lobby area and the Independence Day Celebration for you to get a feel of what the hotel is like.

Overall, I had a wonderful time and the event and would recommend the venue for any special occasion!

ISES iDEA Expo

Despite November 29th being a cold, rainy and dreary day, it did not deter people from attending the ISES (International Special Events Society) iDEA 2009 Expo at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. It was a great success and a lot of fun!

The event kicked off at 4:00pm with a couple of informational presentations: "The Anatomy of an Award-Winning Event" and "West Coast to East Coast trends," followed by the trade show floor opening at 6:00pm. This year’s trade show was slightly different from last years' show -- interspersed among the traditional exhibit booths were four Design Centers, which were complete destinations crafted and outfitted by a team of ISES vendors. The four centers included Cafe Paris, "On the Road" in the USA, Green Road to Cairo, and Havana Nights, and the featured products and displays of creativity made for an excellent exhibit! The Design Centers carried this year’s theme: International iDEAs, Connecting the World One Event at a Time. Here are some shots of the four centers:

It was indeed a night of fun and learning! However, I cannot end this piece without mentioning Fired Up Pizza on the Move! Again, despite Mother Nature, they had freshly baked pizzas going all night! Simply delicious!

The Little Black Dress vs. The Little White Dress

We have all heard about the little black dress (LBD) – and for many years, the LBD has been “a must have” in everyone’s closet! It is the perfect dress for any event. It is a sophisticated, timeless classic, is season-less, always in style, and can be dressed down for work or dressed up for a party with very little effort by simply adding the right accessory. It is said to be “slimming” although not ideal for tropical countries as black is known to absorb heat.

However, as of spring 2009, based on the runway collections, we saw that the little white dress (LWD) was gaining on the LBD. It is considered a cool and refreshing summer choice, gives an aura of angelic innocence and on the contrary to many opinions, it can easily be accessorized. The LWD has always received a bad rap because it can be tricky to pull off for many, as it is somewhat revealing, not considered “slimming” and due to its stain-ability.

There are so many possibilities for the LWD, not only as a fashion statement but as a bridal attire option. Here are a couple from The Platinum Collection by Priscilla of Boston:

November Events

1. November 3rd: I attended a showcase hosted by Heidi Berger of Room Service at the fabulous Long View Gallery Art Museum in Washington, DC. Here are some pictures of the wonderful furniture rentals off of their brand new line!

2. November 4th: I toured the new Sunset Room at the National Harbor in Washington, DC. This is a wonderful venue with some beautiful views -- perfect for a wedding!

3. November 8th: I participated in the Not-So-Big Wedding Competition! The competition was hosted by the Montgomery County Department of Parks & Recreation at the Rockwood Manor in Potomac, Maryland. The challenge was to plan a wedding on a budget -- accommodating 65 guests for less than $15,000. The judge's panel was moderated by Ellen McCarthy of the Washington Post's Wedding Section and panelist included newlyweds who have successfully planned a wedding under $15K. It was a wonderful experience for my entire team, as it was our first competition. Here are some pictures of our table:

October Events

This is another catch-up post, picking up from where I left off after the September Events post. Here's the update from all the events I coordinated and/or attended in October!

1. October 2nd: I collaborated with VMG to plan and produce Total Health Care's 40th Anniversary Fundraiser at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront (BMW). The event theme was Old Hollywood Oscar Night with all the glitz and glamor -- we had actors as paparazzi, Joan Rivers on the Red Carpet, President Obama and First Lady Michelle (complete with a Secret Service detail), and LIVE Oscar statues. It was such a successful and memorable night! The BMW is one of the premier venues in Baltimore, Maryland -- check it out for your next special event! (I'll share additional pictures once I receive them from the photographer).

2. October 6th: I went on a FAM tour to visit all the Prince George's County Parks & Rec venues. I visited Newton Mansion, The PG Ballroom, Oxon Hill Manor, and many more wonderful sites. These venues are rich in history, have beautifully manicured grounds, and are terrific alternatives to typical hotel venues in the Baltimore/Washington area.

I attended a second FAM tour to visit all the Annapolis Area & Anne Arundel County facilities as well. Again, these venues are spectacular and typically more affordable alternatives to hotel venues. They are great venues for weddings, corporate events, and more!

3. October 21st: I went to New York City for the Biz-Bash Trade Show. The event was fabulous! I was able to gain lots of interesting insights on New York venues and vendors for destination events. I also got to see the Bidpal in action -- an innovative tool for those fundraisers!

4. October 22nd: I attended the Harvest Festival Event at the Strathmore in Rockville, Maryland. This is another unique space to consider for your next event. The Mansion and the Art Center are fabulous sites!

5. October 29th: I wanted to share some pictures from my DC ISES Halloween Party. It was held at the National Crime and Punishment Museum in Washington, DC -- how appropriate a venue for the occasion! The hauted house was amazing and truly scary for those of us who scare easily. It was a blast! By the way, that's me in the jailbird costume!

6. October 30th: I attended a very emotional speaking event by motivational speaker The Scary Guy; and yes, "Scary Guy" is his legal name! His speech was absolutely phenomenal and I had to stuggle to fight back some tears. He is truly passionate about his cause -- bullying, violence, and hate crimes among youth -- which we all need to be ambassadors to. Please take a moment to visit his website: www.thescaryguy.com

It's always nice to hear from my readers, and for those of you whom I have met and asked when my next post was coming... here it is! I will begin where I left off in the previous post to get you all updated on what I have bee doing. 1. September 15th: ISES hosted our "back from summer" party at the newly renovated W Hotel -- a beautiful venue! The view of Washington, DC from the rooftop is breathtaking! The party was a lot of fun and it was nice to see everyone again.

3. September 22nd: I attended a food tasting at the Caribbean Caterer's in Rockville, Maryland. The food was delicious -- a traditional wedding dinner prepared with authentic Caribbean spices. My favorites were the mini beef patty appetizers followed by their macaroni pie! Consider them for your next wedding or social event! September 23rd: I went to a networking event hosted by Wedding Planner/Event Manager Linnyette Richardson-Hall (you may have seen her on Who's Wedding Is It Anyways?), at the Si Salsa -- a beautiful hidden gem in Pikesville, Marlyand. It was a lot of fun and a much needed break. The food was delicious and I won a beautiful chili pepper/carnation floral centerpiece:

5. September 28th: Unveiling of the new Tanzania Embassy Chancery in Washingtong, DC by the President of Tanzania, His Excelleny President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. Not only did I plan this unveiling ceremony in two weeks, but also furnished and decorated the fifth floor to simulate the ambassador's office, conference, and reception room since the building was not complete. Needless to say, with such short notice and all the protocals to adhere to, it was a challeneging yet fun event to plan and it turned out to be a great success. My client was very happy, and as a planner, that is always the greatest satisfaction. I couldn't have done it with out my truly amazing vendors who always come through for me no matter what!

I know it has been a while and I apologize to all my dedicated readers, but it seems like time just passes by so fast. It has been busy, but busy is always good! However, I owe all my dedicated readers some fresh new reads -- thank you for following me on Twitter and for reading my updates on Facebook. Although I haven't had the opportunity to sit down and blog, I have been busy tweeting and updating my statuses frequently!

It's been quite a busy week! On Tuesday, ISES had their official "come back from the summer" launching party at the recently renovated W Hotel in Washington, DC. As the new Event Planner's Liaison for their Membership Committee, I was invited to attend, and the event was fabulous! Everything about the hotel was great -- from the ambiance, to the food, to the entertainment. Unfortunately, my camera was out of commission so I was unable to take any pictures of my own, but here's a glimpse from their website.

Advice for Brides-To-Be, Part II

As promised, here are some additional tips for those recently engaged. These focus more specifically on the planning process, but brides-to-be should not forget to care for themselves on the personal side of the wedding planning experience.

1. Make the Essential, Primary Decisions
Determine your wedding style, establish a budget, and then hire a qualified planner. While many brides feel that a planner is unnecessary or that they can handle the entire planning process on their own, what they fail to realize is that it takes over 250 hours to plan a typical wedding! How many modern brides have that much free time on their hands these days? A planner will not only save you time, but can also save you money with their wealth of experience with a variety of vendors. With so much to do and so little time, a knowledgeable planner will assist you in making your wedding day an unforgettable experience. After all -- you only have one day to get it right.

2. Select a Location
Where will the wedding be held? With many people now living away from their hometowns, decisions have to be made as to where the wedding will take place -- the bride's hometown? The groom's hometown? The current place of residence? A destination event? Three major factors will help guide your decision: your personal preference, the budget, and the convenience for your guests.

3. The Ceremony
What type of ceremony will you have? Although many couples still want the traditional/religious ceremony, there are so many options: non-traditional, non-denominational, multicultural, civil, inter-faith, and commitment ceremonies. Be sure to find the right officiant for your choice of ceremony.

4. The Reception
What type of reception will you have? Would you prefer a simple reception or a grand one? Will you want to hold it indoors or outdoors? Will you be serving dinner, cocktails, lunch, or brunch? Will the food be served plated or buffet-style? Will you want to dance during the reception? If so, would you prefer a DJ or a band?

5. The Decorating
To decorate or not? If so, will you make it elaborate or simple? The latter is usually dictated by the choice of venue as some venues have rich decor and may not need any additional decorating. Whatever you decide, be sure that it is the right fit for you and your wedding style.

6. Meet With Vendors
Your planner can assist you with vendor referrals to fit your personality, style, and budget. The planner can even accompany on your visits with vendors and can advise and/or make recommendations when needed. Your wedding planner is there to assist you in bringing your vision to reality, however, you must be very specific in communicating your vision to both your planner and each vendor in order to ensure your wedding style comes to life accordingly.

7. Chose Your Bridal Party
I have had one experience where the bride "fired" her maid of honor two days before the wedding! That being said, be sure to chose your attendants wisely. Weddings tend to bring out the best and worst in people and there will be bumps along the road. So, be sure to carefully select who will make up your "wedding dream team" and do not ask an individual merely out of obligation. Chose those who will really want to make your wedding day memorable.

8. Figure Out the Legalities
Laws vary from state to state, as well as from county to county. A marriage license is typically required, and your marriage is not official until the officiant returns a signed copy back to the city or county from which you obtained the license. In many cases, both you and your fiancee must appear in person to obtain the marriage license, a fee is typically involved, and some counties still require a blood test. Be sure to understand the protocols in your state and county.

9. Determine Whether You Will Register for Gifts
Will you register at a local store or at a national chain? In-store or online? Be sure to consider accessibility to your guests. If gifts are not for you, you might decide to register to have money donated to your favorite charity instead. This is very common among couples who have been living together and already have furnished homes and/or don't need gifts for other reasons.

10. The Rehearsal
The rehearsal is a must for all of your attendants, the parents, and the officiant. You must remember to make sure that everyone is prompt for the rehearsal! I have had a number of occasions where we have been forced to start a rehearsal without the entire bridal party in order to fit into the time constraints of the venue. Remember, everyone needs to get a good night's sleep to prepare for the wedding day -- if your rehearsal is the night before, you don't want to keep your attendants out too late!
